Quite Possibly The Sweetest

Story Ever Told

by Duncan Jones

Once upon a time there were two precious love birds

And they were always wanting to fly and see each other

One of them was a wild and free love bird

And he lived wherever he could fly

But the other was not wild and free

She lived in a cage in a room with a sweet little girl

In a window in a house in a big city

And every day the wild and free love bird would fly to her window

And she would know he was coming

And she would make her feathers pretty

And she would look so beautiful in her cage

And he would land on the window sill and both would smile.

Then he would sing and sing

And she would sing too

And together they were so precious and happy.

And all of the other animals knew it

And everyone in the neighborhood would hear their songs all day long

And it made them happy too

And the time passed by like this

But every year when winter came and the cold winds blew

She would feel sad because he would have to leave her

And though he would stay as long as he could

When winter came he would eventually have to leave and fly away

And she would feel sad

And she would tell him that she was sorry for being in a cage

But he would just tell her sweet things

And say that she was all that he ever wanted

And he would sing and tell her that she was his love bird

And she would sing back and tell him the same

And then he would pretend to fall down and be silly to make her laugh

And he would only leave when she was laughing and smiling

And when he was cold and had to fly away he would remember her

And she would remember him

And he would think of her all winter long

And she would think of him all winter long

And he would never forget her

And she never would never forget him

And both would be happy

And every spring as soon as the sun regained its strength He would open his wings and fly as fast as he could straight back to her window

And she would never know exactly when he would come back

And so he would catch her off guard and surprise her

And she would have to rush to make her feathers pretty

And she would be just a little bit embarrassed

And he would love it

And she would love it too

And he would sing new songs that he had thought of

And he would tell her new sweet things that he had thought of

And she would listen and be so happy and excited

And sometimes she would interrupt just to say how much she had missed him

And then he would tell her adventure stories and flying stories

And she would love it

And he would love it too

And the other animals would know that winter was over when they heard the love birds singing

And the time passed by like this

The days passed by and became years

And the years passed by and became time

Sometimes she would see other love birds outside together

And she would tell him that one day he would have to find another love bird

Who lived on the outside like he did

And who was wild and free like he was

And who could fly wherever she wanted like he could

But he would just tell her sweet things

And say that she was all he ever wanted

And then he would pretend to fall down and be silly

And she would laugh and smile and both would be happy

But as more time passed by

And more days became more years

She became a little bit more sad

Until one day the caged love bird heard the little girl and the family talking

Saying that they were all going to move

And that her cage would be in a new room with a new window

In a new house in a new neighborhood in a new city

And that day, when her wild and free love bird came to see her

She did not tell him what she had heard

She thought that it would be best for him to find another wild and free love bird

Who lived on the outside like he did

And who was wild and free like he was

And who could fly wherever she wanted like he could

And though this made her so sad

She wanted him to be as happy as he could be because she loved him

And she never realized how much he meant it when he would say that she was all he ever wanted

And so one day the wild and free love bird came to her window and she was gone

And his heart was so heavy

And he was so worried and sad

And he raced through the sky asking all the other animals about her

But they all lived on the outside like he did

And none of them knew where she or the little girl or the family had gone

And so he flew to all the windows of all the houses

In all the neighborhoods in all the cities that he could

And all the while he sang his song high in the sky

But he could not find her

And in between new windows he would fly back to their first window to see if she was there

But she never was

And the caged love bird would look out her new window

And she would sometimes think that she could see him in the sky

But she was inside

And he could not hear her

And she was never sure

Sometimes she would see other love birds in the window

But never him

And she would try to make her feathers pretty in case one day he might come

But he never did

And they were both so sad

In fact the caged love bird was so sad that the little girl noticed And over and over would ask her mommy if they could let her go free because she always looked out the window But the little girl’s mommy would say “no no” And explain that their caged love bird was too pretty and expensive to fly free

And the time passed by like this.

But finally it broke the little girl’s heart too much to see her love bird sad

So one day she asked her caged love bird if she would like to fly free

And her love bird sang the prettiest song

And the little girl understood

And though she knew she would be in trouble

She opened the window

And she opened the cage

And again the love bird sang the prettiest song

And jumped out of her cage

And opened her wings …

But she had never flown before

And she did not know how

And she could not reach the window

So the sweet little girl picked her up and put her on the window sill

And the love bird sang her pretty song

She sang and sang and sang and sang …

And very far away a certain wild and free love bird looked up And quicker than ever before he opened his wings and flew as fast as he could fly

Her song was even prettier than anyone had remembered

And so all the animals came to see

And all the neighborhood came to see

And the little girl’s mommy came to see

So on the window sill the caged love bird was singing

And in the sky the wild and free love bird was flying as fast as he could fly

And in the room the little girl was happy and giggling

And on the stairs the little girl’s mommy was coming

And the wild and free love bird looked down and saw her on the window sill

And the caged love bird looked up and saw him in the sky

And at that instant they were they happiest they had ever been

But as he was landing the little girl stopped giggling because her mommy was there

And her mommy said “no no,” and reached for the caged love bird

And took her away

And put her back in the cage

And the window was closed

But the wild and free love bird had found her

And just like so many times before

He landed outside on the window sill

And both smiled

And he was so happy that he had found her

And even though she was back in her cage and the window was closed

The caged love bird was so happy that he had found her too

And for the first time in a very long while they were both so happy

And the wild and free love bird told the caged love bird how he had searched so many new windows

And how he had always gone back to their first window because she was all he ever wanted

And he said how much he had missed her

And that he had never forgotten her

And she said how much she had missed him

And that she had never forgotten him either

And then he told her all the adventure stories and flying stories that she had missed

And he sang all the songs that he had thought of for her

And he told her so many sweet things to make her smile

And she loved it and he loved it too

And she told him all about how she had thought it was best for him to be happy with another wild and free love bird And then she said she was sorry for not knowing how to fly and that she had tried And he said that he did not care at all Because she was his love bird And she was all he ever wanted

And he did not need to be silly this time because she was already the happiest she could be

And later she told him the story of how the little girl was very sweet to her And again they sang the prettiest song And even though the little girl was downstairs in trouble she could hear them And she knew that they were happy And so she was happy too

And that is quite possibly the sweetest story ever told.
