If No One's Told A Story, You Must Tell

by Duncan Jones

A classroom in a school was dull and bored

The lesson held not their attention any more

Most open eyes were cast upon the floor

Tired and repeating the same familiar chore

So One rewrote the words upon the page

About the people that were from another age

Told a story of tiger filled with rage

His stripes were shadows painted by a cage

Now you know ... Now! You must go ... Now!

One by one ... Now! You must run ... Now!

Looking out the window clouds passed by

Glass melted! And the windows opened wide

Smiling was a dragon in the sky

Through fire, “Hurry now let’s see if you can fly!

Open up your wings and come with me

For there are stories that your history can’t see!”

And down below the tiger running free

Escaped his shadow stripes for all eternity!

Now you know ... Now! You must go ... Now!

One by one ... Now! You must run ... Now!

Then came to life the faces from the book

The feast was ready, the fire slowly cooked

Such warriors and colors, how they looked!

And the thunder coming close oh how it shook!

“Was right here that a battle raged all night!

A hunter swift, a mighty buffalo did fight!

It raged until the dawn’s early light!

Rewrite the words so that all may see this sight!”

Now you know ... Now! You must go ... Now!

One by one ... Now! You must run ... Now!

Behind the tree a gambler got away

“Part of the deal, I never get to stay

Life’s a game, and everyone must play!

And all you really need to know is ‘Not today!’”

Full moon was covered black by a typhoon

Torn sails, “So sorry boys, we’re going under soon!”

Turns out the great ship’s name was “Silver Spoon”

And all were washed ashore a beautiful lagoon!

Now you know ... Now! You must go ... Now!

One by one ... Now! You must run ... Now!

Dragon roared, the classroom heard the bell

And in One’s pocket now a silvery sea shell

If no one’s told a story, you must tell

The one thing they can’t do is tell themselves

The room with voices instantly was filled

One thought, “Another silly daydream,” until

Looking back One smiled and caught a chill ...

Sat a dragonfly upon the window sill
